Circling the North Pole, the tundra is a cold, dry, treeless land of freezing winds hostile to life. Although the top layer of soil will thaw during a short growing season, the ground beneath always remains frozen. The few arctic animals that survive in this biome are well adapted to the low temperatures, low precipitation and long winters.
Animals of this region include: the arctic fox, caribou, muskox and snowy owl.
